Curriculum and Professional Development Specialist at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy
Karen Togliatti is a Curriculum and Professional Development Specialist at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA). Karen began her career as an Outside Plant Engineer for a telecommunications company after receiving a BS in Industrial Engineering from the University of Illinois – Champaign. After receiving an MS in Engineering Technology with a focus on Industrial Management and Quality Control, she began teaching as an adjunct instructor at Joliet Junior College and also worked as a process optimization consultant for companies in the food industry.
Karen enjoyed teaching so much that she obtained an MA in Secondary Education – Mathematics from National-Louis University upon which she began teaching mathematics in the Plainfield school district at both the middle-school and the high-school level for nine years. While at Plainfield, she was instrumental in bringing technology into her classroom and mentored several new teachers in developing a constructivist mathematics classroom. In her tenure at IMSA, Karen has written a variety of integrated STEM lessons and has presented at both the state and the national level on STEM topics, primarily on statistics education at the middle-school level.
